Spherical roller thrust bearings consists of two rings and asymmetrical rollers of spherical shape. They can accommodate combined radial and axial loads and also accommodate misalignment of the shafts. They are often used together with radial spherical roller bearings. Fluid bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a thin layer of pressurized liquid, these give low drag. Magnetic bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a magnetic field. This is used where very high speeds or very low drag is needed, for example the Zippe-type centrifuge. They are commonly used in automotive, marine, and aerospace applications. Thrust bearings are used in cars because the forward gears in modern car gearboxes use helical gears which, while aiding in smoothness and noise reduction, cause axial forces that need to be dealt with. The double helical or herringbone gear balances the thrust caused by normal helical gears. Roll forging is a process where round or flat bar stock is reduced in thickness and increased in length. Roll forging is performed using two cylindrical or semi-cylindrical rolls, each containing one or more shaped grooves. They allow your wheels to turn freely over thousands of miles by cushioning the contact between the wheel and the spindle it sits on with frictionless bearings and lots of nice, gooey grease. This grease tends to pick up dust, dirt, and little particles of metal, even though the bearings are protected to some extent by the hub and the brake drum or disc. Usually, only the non-drive wheels (that is, the front wheels on rear-wheel drive vehicles and the rear wheels on front-wheel drive vehicles) have repackable wheel bearings. Vehicles with front-wheel drive have sealed front bearings, but some have packable rear ones. The bearings on four-wheel drive vehicles are quite complicated and should be repacked professionally. Before you check your bearings, consult your owner's manual or dealership to find out whether the bearings on your vehicle are sealed. If they are, you can't repack them. If you have drum brakes: It's important to check the bearings when you check your brakes to make sure that the grease hasn't become fouled. If it has, the particles act abrasively to wear away the very connection the bearings are designed to protect, and the result is a noisy, grinding ride. In extreme cases, you could even lose the wheel! If the bearings look cruddy, either repack them yourself or get a professional to do it. If you have disc brakes: You have to remove the caliper to get at the bearings. Although this task isn't terribly difficult, certain aspects of the job can create problems for a beginner. Because your brake system can kill you if it isn't assembled properly, you might want to do the job under supervision at an auto class.

Drop forging is a metal shaping process, the metal to be formed is first heated then shaped by forcing it into the contours of a die, this force can be in excess of 2000 tons. The drop forging process can be performed with the material at various temperatures. Hot Forging: During hot forging the metals are heated to above their recrystallization temperature. There are two types of drop forging, open die and closed die. Open die drop forging requires the operator to position the work piece while it is impacted by the ram. The die attached to the ram is usually flat or of a simple contour, most of the shaping is achieved by the operator physically positioning the work piece before each stroke of the ram. There are also special dies which can be used to cut the metal, form holes or notches.
