Upset forging increases the diameter of the workpiece by compressing its length. Based on number of pieces produced this is the most widely used forging process. A few examples of common parts produced using the upset forging process are engine valves, couplings, bolts, screws, and other fasteners. Y-bearings in the YHB 2 and YHC 2 series with a hexagonal bore and in the YQC 2 series with a square bore are intended primarily for use in applications, where high torques have to be transmitted. The bore is produced to a plus tolerance and allows easy mounting and dismounting. These bearings are axially located on the shaft using adjacent components. The standard outer ring, which has a convex sphered outer surface and no lubrication holes, is identified by the suffix W. YHB 2 and YHC 2 bearings Bearings with a hexagonal bore are filled with a special VT357 specification grease (see section "Grease fill"). They are fitted with the rugged LS8 contact seal, which rides on the ground surface of the inner ring shoulder . In cases where there is a lubrication hole in the outer ring, the suffix W is omitted from the bearing designation. YQC 2 bearings. Bearings with a square bore are equipped with a highly efficient triple lip contact seal, which rides on the ground surface of the inner ring shoulder . These bearings are filled with the standard grease (see section "Grease fill"). Bearings having a cylindrical outer surface are also available and identified by the suffix C, e.g. YQC 208-102 CW.

165. Ball and Roller Bearings

Due to its construction, using spheres, the load is focused at the position that the ball contacts the inner race (this is referred to as POINT contact) meaning they can run at high speeds. A typical application for this bearing would be the internals of a turbocharger where the ability to cope with high speeds and acceleration are at a premium.

169. Hot Forging
Hot forging is the plastic deformation of metal at a temperature and strain rate such that recrystallization occurs simultaneously with deformation, thus avoiding strain hardening. For this to occur, high workpiece temperature (matching the metal's recrystallization temperature) must be attained throughout the process. A form of hot forging is isothermal forging, where materials and dies are heated to the same temperature. In nearly all cases, isothermal forging is conducted on superalloys in a vacuum or highly controlled atmosphere to prevent oxidation.

170. Ball Bearings
The purpose of a ball bearing is to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads. It achieves this by using at least two races to contain the balls and transmit the loads through the balls. In most applications, one race is stationary and the other is attached to the rotating assembly (e.g., a hub or shaft). As one of the bearing races rotates it causes the balls to rotate as well. Because the balls are rolling they have a much lower coefficient of friction than if two flat surfaces were sliding against each other. Ball bearings tend to have lower load capacity for their size than other kinds of rolling-element bearings due to the smaller contact area between the balls and races. However, they can tolerate some misalignment of the inner and outer races.

171. Open Die Forging
Open-die forging is also known as smith forging. In open-die forging, a hammer strikes and deforms the workpiece, which is placed on a stationary anvil. Open-die forging gets its name from the fact that the dies (the surfaces that are in contact with the workpiece) do not enclose the workpiece, allowing it to flow except where contacted by the dies. Therefore the operator needs to orient and position the workpiece to get the desired shape. The dies are usually flat in shape, but some have a specially shaped surface for specialized operations. For example, a die may have a round, concave, or convex surface or be a tool to form holes or be a cut-off tool. Open-die forging lends itself to short runs and is appropriate for art smithing and custom work. In some cases, open-die forging may be employed to rough-shape ingots to prepare them for subsequent operations. Open-die forging may also orient the grain to increase strength in the required direction. Cogging is successive deformation of a bar along its length using an open-die drop forge. It is commonly used to work a piece of raw material to the proper thickness.
