The length of the roller and the diameter of the wide and the narrow ends and the angle of rollers need to be carefully calculated to provide the correct taper so that each end of the roller rolls smoothly on the bearing face without skidding. These are the type most commonly used in automotive applications (to support the wheels of a motor car for example), where they are used in pairs to accommodate axial thrust in either direction, as well as radial loads. They can support rather larger thrust loads than the ball type due to the larger contact area, but are more expensive to manufacture. Spherical roller thrust bearings consists of two rings and asymmetrical rollers of spherical shape. They can accommodate combined radial and axial loads and also accommodate misalignment of the shafts. They are often used together with radial spherical roller bearings. Fluid bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a thin layer of pressurized liquid, these give low drag. Magnetic bearings, where the axial thrust is supported on a magnetic field. This is used where very high speeds or very low drag is needed, for example the Zippe-type centrifuge. They are commonly used in automotive, marine, and aerospace applications. Thrust bearings are used in cars because the forward gears in modern car gearboxes use helical gears which, while aiding in smoothness and noise reduction, cause axial forces that need to be dealt with. The double helical or herringbone gear balances the thrust caused by normal helical gears. One specific thrust bearing in an automobile is the clutch "throw out" bearing, sometimes called the clutch release bearing.

Drop forging is a metal shaping process, the metal to be formed is first heated then shaped by forcing it into the contours of a die, this force can be in excess of 2000 tons. The drop forging process can be performed with the material at various temperatures. Hot Forging: During hot forging the metals are heated to above their recrystallization temperature. The main benefit of this hot forging is that work hardening is prevented due to the recrystallization of the metal as it begins to cool. Cold Forging: Cold Forging is generally performed with metal at room temperature below the the recrystallization temperature. Cold forging typically work hardens the metal. There are two types of drop forging, open die and closed die. Open die drop forging requires the operator to position the work piece while it is impacted by the ram. The die attached to the ram is usually flat or of a simple contour, most of the shaping is achieved by the operator physically positioning the work piece before each stroke of the ram. There are also special dies which can be used to cut the metal, form holes or notches.

A rolling-element bearing, also known as a rolling bearing, is a bearing which carries a load by placing round elements between two bearing rings. The relative motion of the pieces causes the round elements to roll with very little rolling resistance and with little sliding. One of the earliest and best-known rolling-element bearings are sets of logs laid on the ground with a large stone block on top. The most common type of forging equipment is the hammer and anvil. Principles behind the hammer and anvil are still used today in drop-hammer equipment. The principle behind the machine is simple: raise the hammer and drop it or propel it into the workpiece, which rests on the anvil. The main variations between drop-hammers are in the way the hammer is powered; the most common being air and steam hammers. Drop-hammers usually operate in a vertical position. The main reason for this is excess energy (energy that isn't used to deform the workpiece) that isn't released as heat or sound needs to be transmitted to the foundation. Moreover, a large machine base is needed to absorb the impacts. To overcome some shortcomings of the drop-hammer, the counterblow machine or impactor is used. In a counterblow machine both the hammer and anvil move and the workpiece is held between them. Here excess energy becomes recoil. This allows the machine to work horizontally and have a smaller base. Other advantages include less noise, heat and vibration. It also produces a distinctly different flow pattern. Both of these machines can be used for open-die or closed-die forging. A forging press, often just called a press, is used for press forging.

Upset forging increases the diameter of the workpiece by compressing its length. Based on number of pieces produced this is the most widely used forging process. A few examples of common parts produced using the upset forging process are engine valves, couplings, bolts, screws, and other fasteners. Upset forging is usually done in special high-speed machines called crank presses, but upsetting can also be done in a vertical crank press or a hydraulic press. The machines are usually set up to work in the horizontal plane, to facilitate the quick exchange of workpieces from one station to the next. The initial workpiece is usually wire or rod, but some machines can accept bars up to 25 cm (9.8 in) in diameter and a capacity of over 1000 tons. The standard upsetting machine employs split dies that contain multiple cavities. The dies open enough to allow the workpiece to move from one cavity to the next; the dies then close and the heading tool, or ram, then moves longitudinally against the bar, upsetting it into the cavity. If all of the cavities are utilized on every cycle then a finished part will be produced with every cycle, which makes this process advantageous for mass production.

The other thing is to look for the amount of movement between the drum and the outer tube. Now the bearings on this machine are fine, you can see there is no real movement there. But if your bearings have gone, the inner drum will move a lot in relation to the outer tub. So here we have the front bearing, the rear bearing and the bearing seal, and they come as a complete set for this Bosch machine. You may find that for your make and model you do need to buy them separately, but do buy all three as we want to replace the lot. We also have a tub seal in this set, because we going to need to remove the whole tub, split it in two and when we put that back together again it's important that we put a new seal on so that it's nice and water-tight. Now this is a big job, not for the feint hearted , you are going to need a little bit of space to work in, but it's going to save you a fortune compared with buying a new machine or calling out an engineer. Safety first, make sure you are unplugged from the mains. So let's get on with removing the tub from the machine.

If you have plastic core scooter wheels then fitting the bearings is very straight forward as they typically can be pushed in by hand without issue. Fitting scooter bearings into Metal core wheels is a little trickier as they are designed to be a tight fit so pushing them in by hand rarely works. In our workshop we used to use a vise to gently squeeze them in, but now we use a hammer!! Apply a small amount of grease to the edges of each bearing you are going to install. Apply a small amount of grease to the inside hole on the scooter wheel where the bearings are going to be fitted. Place the bearing over the hole in the wheel and try and make sure that it is straight/level as possible. Place either a block of wood or an old paperback book over the top of the bearing and gently strike this with the hammer (Important - do not strike the bearing directly with the hammer). When the bearing has been hammered in fully into the hole in the middle of your wheel it should sit flush with the edge of the wheel Turn the wheel over and insert the bearing spacer (you will need a bearing spacer, if you do not use one your wheel will not spin when you do your axles up securely!)
