The best position to do this is hunched over the wheel while it sits on the ground. Whatever you do,do not open the cones at all while in this position. Just unlock it so you can unscrew everything with your fingers later. Grab the axle on the side that is still locked in place and point the end that you've just loosened, up. Now it is time to unscrew the locking nut almost completely off the axle. Next, unscrew the bearing cone to expose the wheel bearings to the light of day. Any grease in there? Re-grease. The fast way to re-grease your bearings is by just shooting grease in the bearings, screwing the cone back in, flipping the wheel over, hold the cone of the bearing you've just greased, grab the axle now facing up, unscrew it to reveal the other side's bearings and pack them with grease. But the proper way is by taking everything off, clean all the cones, hub cups, bearings, and repack with grease. Reassemble. Screw the bearing cone back into place, but not too tight. Bearings should be able to roll smoothly without axle play. Tighten the lock nut into place and check again.

Sealed bearings are lubricated as standard with an extreme pressure bearing grease according to table 1. They should not be heated to temperatures above 80°C during mounting, and should not be washed. Sealed bearings do not need to be relubricated when the operating temperature does not exceed 70°C and the rotational speed is below 50% of the limiting speed listed in the product table. When temperature and/or speeds are high, relubrication with a similar grease with lithium thickener is recommended. In this case the polymer band, which covers the lubrication holes in the outer ring must be removed before mounting. Note that only a small amount of grease is needed to relubricate sealed bearings. The grease should be pressed in slowly through the lubrication holes in the outer ring while the bearing is rotating. Excessive pressure should be avoided so as not to damage the seals. The internal design of a sealed bearing corresponds to that of an open bearing. The external dimensions are also the same except for bearings based on the 222 and 223 series. These bearings are slightly wider and carry the series designation BS2-22 and BS2-23 respectively. Sealed bearings are available with a cylindrical bore as standard. However most bearings in the BS2-22 series are available with a tapered bore as well. Every sealed bearing can be supplied with a tapered bore to special order. To prevent interference with the seal, the diameter of the shaft abutment should not exceed damax at least for the 1 to 2 mm closest to the bearing. If the bearings are secured axially on the shaft by a lock nut, SKF recommends using a KMFE lock nut or to position an intermediate ring between the bearing and the lock nut.

118. Open Die Forging
Open-die forging is also known as smith forging. In open-die forging, a hammer strikes and deforms the workpiece, which is placed on a stationary anvil. Open-die forging gets its name from the fact that the dies (the surfaces that are in contact with the workpiece) do not enclose the workpiece, allowing it to flow except where contacted by the dies. Therefore the operator needs to orient and position the workpiece to get the desired shape. The dies are usually flat in shape, but some have a specially shaped surface for specialized operations. Open-die forging lends itself to short runs and is appropriate for art smithing and custom work. Hot forging is the plastic deformation of metal at a temperature and strain rate such that recrystallization occurs simultaneously with deformation, thus avoiding strain hardening. Cold forging is a high speed manufacturing process whereby metal is shaped at room temperature often without the need for the removal of material. A simple blank is placed within a die and a punch is pressed into the blank. The blank then takes on the form of the punch and the die. By utilising multiple dies and punches in succession very complex shapes can be achieved. Metal is forced beyond its yield (elastic) limit and retains its altered shape upon removal from the die. The metal is not forced beyond its tensile strength, otherwise fracturing would occur (the exception is when trimming or piercing). How to fit new drum bearings to a washing machine. The drum bearings sit at the back behind the drum and allow the whole things to spin nice and smoothly. So how do you know if you need new drum bearings? Well one customer described it sounding like a concrete mixer on overdrive; it can make a real racket if the drum bearings have gone. The other thing is to look for the amount of movement between the drum and the outer tube. Now the bearings on this machine are fine, you can see there is no real movement there. But if your bearings have gone, the inner drum will move a lot in relation to the outer tub. So here we have the front bearing, the rear bearing and the bearing seal, and they come as a complete set for this Bosch machine. You may find that for your make and model you do need to buy them separately, but do buy all three as we want to replace the lot. We also have a tub seal in this set, because we going to need to remove the whole tub, split it in two and when we put that back together again it's important that we put a new seal on so that it's nice and water-tight. Now this is a big job, not for the feint hearted , you are going to need a little bit of space to work in, but it's going to save you a fortune compared with buying a new machine or calling out an engineer. Safety first, make sure you are unplugged from the mains. So let's get on with removing the tub from the machine.

142. Scooter Bearings
If you have plastic core scooter wheels then fitting the bearings is very straight forward as they typically can be pushed in by hand without issue. Fitting scooter bearings into Metal core wheels is a little trickier as they are designed to be a tight fit so pushing them in by hand rarely works. In our workshop we used to use a vise to gently squeeze them in, but now we use a hammer!! Apply a small amount of grease to the edges of each bearing you are going to install. Apply a small amount of grease to the inside hole on the scooter wheel where the bearings are going to be fitted. Place the bearing over the hole in the wheel and try and make sure that it is straight/level as possible. Place either a block of wood or an old paperback book over the top of the bearing and gently strike this with the hammer (Important - do not strike the bearing directly with the hammer). When the bearing has been hammered in fully into the hole in the middle of your wheel it should sit flush with the edge of the wheel Turn the wheel over and insert the bearing spacer (you will need a bearing spacer, if you do not use one your wheel will not spin when you do your axles up securely!)
